ABSTRACT
Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of medical informatics in enhancing public health practice in disease surveillance, patients’ outcomes, and health care system efficiency. The study adopted qualitative research design to establish data trends. Specifically, document analysis was the data collection method used in this study and it involved conducting thematic analysis of subjective data. The specific data sources were national health surveys, published papers and informatics reports from reliable sources. The findings in this research indicated that medical informatics enhances the detection of disease outbreaks, which is essential in making informed healthcare decisions. In addition, this research found that medical informatics contributes to patient safety and quality of care through innovations such as the Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) and telemedicine. Nevertheless, the study also revealed that there are challenges such as data privacy, compatibility, funding and, resistance to change that should be addressed before adopting medical informatics. Therefore, this study highlighted the significance of medical informatics in enhancing public health systems.
