ABSTRACT

Knee osteoarthritis is a common and disabling pathology. Treatment with platelet-rich plasma concentrates (PRP) has made progress in recent years. The objective was to research the epidemiological and clinical profile and the interest of PRP management in Garoua.
We conducted a prospective and descriptive study at the General Hospital and the Regional Hospital of Garoua for 6 months. We included all consenting patients with clinically and radiologically diagnosed knee osteoarthritis. A blood sample was taken, centrifuged to obtain a PRP, and then injected into the knee. A rating of the WOMAC score was carried out before the injection, and after the injection was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. The data were analyzed using SPSS V.20 software. statistical significance was considered for a P <0.05.
The prevalence in this study was 5.9%. The average age was 55,055±9,013 years. The sex ratio M/F was 0.89. Obesity and bilateral disease accounted for 63.6% and 60% respectively. Prior to PRP administration, the WOMAC score was 45.16±12.04. At M1 after administration, the score increased to 27.38±13.38; at M3 at 30.97 ±13.049 and at M6 at 34.88±15.89. There is a significant difference in the averages of WOMAC Score over time.
Knee osteoarthritis is common in our environment. It affects obese women bilaterally. There is a significant improvement in the WOMAC score for pain, as a function of time.
