ABSTRACT
Curative medicine in the domain of ophthalmology gives ophthalmic status from gaining the respect of the community, satisfaction from helping people in their eye care needs, success from people paying for eye care services rendered. Behind the eye health restoration process, there is a huge work eye care managers perform that is not usually seen by the common public. To perfectly exercise their duties, this category of eye health personnel needs eye health managerial competencies. The objective of this article was to study the basic managerial competencies in eye health industry. This article defines clearly what competencies mean – that is “knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviour that contribute to the individuals and organizational performance” [1]. Generally, Managers carryout planning, organizing, staffing, controlling, directing and decision making on daily basis. Planning which means set a direction and determines what need to be accomplished – Organizing which is distribution of authority and responsibility, teamwork – Staffing which means hiring, retaining and developing human resources – Controlling which is monitoring staff and performance – Directing which is motivating, communicating, instructing, leading and supervising employees – Decision making
which is making choices by gathering information and assessing alternatives resolutions. The investigator has put emphasis on the following basic competencies as far as Eye care management is concerned. This paper elaborates en details on lines below.
•Planning and administration (setting broad objective and how to achieve them with whom and using what).
•Leadership and team work (leading team and managing team dynamics successfully) to achieve objective of the health industry.
•Communication (using formal, informal communication, attend global network meeting, giving speech, writing an email are all associated with passing message to guide achieving objectives).
•Global eye health (knowledge of global eye health market, service, and understanding few people culture).
•Strategic action (understanding overall mission and values of the eye health industry and concerns of stake holders).
•Self-management (ability to regulate one’s emotion, thoughts and behaviour)
•Advocacy (pleading for eye care at all levels- Community, Nationwide, Regional or International)
•Eye health marketing (strategies using in promoting and selling eye care services to the consumers of care).
•Conceptual competency (which is the ability of Eye Care Manager to critically analyze a complex situation).
•Technical competency which is the skill that reflect expertise or ability perform a specific task.
•Interpersonal competency (this skill deals with communication and work with others such as peers, supervisors or subordinates).
A model has been designed for easy assimilation of the competencies. Effective management practice in eye health industry will enhance staff gratification and improve eye health standards and increase demand.
