ABSTRACT

Suicide, or self-murder, can occur without any pathological diagnosis. This article aims to give a psychoanalytical reading of suicide through the theory of loss of object. It appears that the origin of suicide lies in a failure to resolve the depressive position to object loss anxiety or depressive anxiety. This failure to resolve left a narcissistic hole due to the prominence of the ‘bad’ object in the psyche. This unresolved problem can be reactivated by any experience of loss or grief (frustration). In a last-ditch attempt to escape the anxiety of object loss, the subject identifies with the ‘bad’ object previously introjected and destroys it by committing suicide. Suicide can be avoided or even eradicated if human relationships regain their humanistic character, which puts the well-being of the
individual at the center of everything.

Keywords: Suicide, loss of object, introjection, identification with the ‘bad’ object, destruction of the ‘bad’ object.
