ABSTRACT
Background: The transmission of pathogens through healthcare workers’
hands during care is responsible for a large proportion of nosocomial
infections. This article aims to identify the motivations and barriers to hand
hygiene compliance among students in training.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among students engaged
in internships and rotations in healthcare facilities in Cameroon. An
anonymous, structured, and self-administered online questionnaire was
voluntarily completed by the students between April and May 2023. The
questions focused on the motivations and perceived barriers regarding hand
hygiene.
Results: A total of 787 students were included, with an average age of 23.88±4
years (min=17; max=38) and a median of 23 years. Nursing students (42.1%)
were the most represented group, followed by medical students (25.5%).
Approximately 65 students (8%) were not informed about proper hand hygiene
practices in the hospital, particularly those who had spent less time on clinical
rotations. The main motivation was understanding the importance of hand
hygiene and supervision. On the other hand, the main barriers identified were
the lack of water and disinfectants, workload overload, and insufficient
knowledge of best practices.
