ABSTRACT
Background and objective: Cardiovascular disease remains the world’s leading cause of death and disability. Their incidence and prevalence vary from one country to another and within the same country. Little is known about the epidemiological situation of these diseases in certain regions, such as northern Cameroon. The aim of the study was to describe and determine the factors associated with hypertension, diabetes and lipid abnormalities in the city of Ngaoundéré.
Materials and Methods: This was a community-based, cross-sectional, analytical study covering the period from February to December 2020. The study population consisted of people aged 20 and over residing in the city of Ngaoundéré. Participants were selected using a three-stage cluster sampling design. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical and biological variables were studied. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013® and SPSS 20.0®.
Results: A total of 948 participants were included in the study. Mean systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP), pulsatile (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) levels were 131.27 ± 24.08 mmHg, 86.56 ± 14.46 mmHg, 44.71 ± 15.46 mmHg and 101.46 ± 16.72 mmHg respectively. Mean blood concentrations of glucose, triglycerides and total cholesterol were 84.65 ± 20.31 mg/dL, 105.49 ± 51.20 mg/dL and 207.30 ± 54.18 mg/dL respectively in the study population.
The prevalences of arterial hypertension, diabetes, high blood triglyceride and total cholesterol levels, overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity were 46.94% (n = 445), 5.59% (n = 53), 5.26% (n = 49), 25.97% (n = 242) 27.00% (n = 256), 12.55% (n = 119) and 20.99% (n = 199) respectively.
Factors associated with cardiovascular risk included high age (40-64 years for hypertriglyceridemia and ≥ 65 years for the others).
Conclusion: Hypertension, diabetes and lipid abnormalities are frequent and relatively unknown in the Ngaoundéré community. Better knowledge of these risk factors is needed to improve cardiovascular disease prevention in the Adamaoua region.
